Time of transition

Article Abstract:

Intermediate care can play a valuable role in assisting patients who have been discharged from hospital in preparing for living independently at home. This form of care is generally offered for a limited period, usually between 14 and 21 days, and focuses on allowing the patient to regain independence, rather than on acute medical treatment. There are considerable financial barriers to the establishment of intermediate care services, and it is also necessary to gain the support of nurses and other health care professionals, who may feel that they are losing their power over patients.

The pursuit of excellence

Article Abstract:

Nursing development units (NDUs) are locations in which nurses are aware of nursing's potential and aim to make developments. They can be set up in any clinical environment. NDUs provide a resource for consultancy and teaching and a location for demonstrating good practice. In NDUs, empowering nurses leads to empowerment of patients. One aim of such units is to excel in clinical practice. Nurses want and can work autonomously. In NDUs, the clinical team is committed and has strong leadership.

Taking a lead

Article Abstract:

The Nursing Developments Network aims for widespread dissemination of Nursing Development Units' (NDU) research and practice. It has developed from the Primary Nursing Network established in 1989. Innovative practice and critical evaluation characterise NDUs. Nurses would, therefore, benefit from access to a national network of good practice in all specialities. Such a body of knowledge would encourage professional awareness and personal development.
