'Time ran out for us.'

Article Abstract:

A nurse whose fiance died from Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD) is bitter about political responses to the dangers associated with beef. She claims that people have died, and will die, from CJD because the UK government covered up fears about beef safety. She also claims that the quality of care given to CJD patients is variable in the UK and she is campaigning for better national standards of care. Her anger at the poor standard of nursing care given to her fiance has prevented her from returning to her nursing career.

Thalidomide: is it any wonder?

Article Abstract:

The drug Thalidomide has been used in the UK to treat patients suffering from skin complaints, ulcers and multiple sclerosis, despite having been withdrawn as a cure for morning sickness in 1961, after 450 children were born with severe birth defects between 1958 to 1961. The Thalidomide Society have condemned the use of the drug, claiming women of child-bearing age could be put a risk. Thalidomide manufacturers are claiming immunity from possible side effects, with doctors bearing fully responsibility.

Over-the-counter emergency contraception on the cards

Article Abstract:

A number of initiatives are being developed in the UK to tackle unwanted pregnancies by making emergency contraception more widely available. The Dept of Health has denied that a decision on over-the-counter sales of emergency contraception will be made before Christmas 2000, but it is believed that action will be seen in early 2001.
