Time to talk

Article Abstract:

British nurses are failing to communicate enough with their patients, even though nearly all patients would like them to. Nurses claim that lack of time and opportunity prevents them from conversing on matters other than practical patient care. Some nurses want to avoid emotional distress and discuss patients with third parties wherever possible, says Scottish Association of Health Councils representative, Pat Dawson. Others believe that time constraints and reduced management should be blamed.

Ballot to strike set in motion

Article Abstract:

NHS trusts must make reasonable pay offers to nurses by the end of Jul 1996 if they are to avoid the threat of strike action, according to Unison. Strike action is already a possibility at five hospitals where nurses are currently balloting on this issue. Unison points out that NHS trusts are acting unfairly, as nurses should have received a pay increase on Apr 01, 1996. There is now growing concern about the credibility of a local pay system in the NHS.

Divided we stand

Article Abstract:

British Royal College of Nursing president Betty Kershaw firmly believes that the union should not be involved with representations from other parties in the Health Service, such as ancillary workers. Nurses have a professional outlook which is highly ethical and regulatory, says Kershaw. Unison representatives feel that nurses should join other healthcare groups to create a larger body to fight the government for better pay awards.
