Today's physicians are being asked to do too much

Article Abstract:

Physicians that attempt to get involved in the management of health maintenance organizations instead become increasingly dependent on non-professional staff. This is because the problems encountered are often more complex and time consuming than expected. Physicians should concentrate on their areas of expertise: quality of care and utilization issues. Competent administrators working together with conscientious physicians are critical to the success of health maintenance organizations.

Delegates want discharge decisions left to physicians

Article Abstract:

American Medical Association (AMA) delegates approved a policy at a June 1996 meeting that calls for medical considerations to be the dominant factor in deciding when to discharge patients from a hospital or other facility. The policy is a response to the length-of-stay requirements that have been implemented by insurers, managed care groups and even government agencies. The policy encourages doctors to share with insurers the evidence on which they base discharge decisions.
