Tolerance and acceptability of an efavirenz-based regimen in 740 adults (predominantly women) in West Africa

Article Abstract:

The 6-month efficacy and tolerance of an efavirenz-containing highly active antiretroviral therapy regimen in a large cohort of HIV-1-infected adults is presented. Considering the very high hepatic and cutaneous tolerance, efavirenz could be considered as a valuable first-line drug for women of childbearing age who agree to use contraception in sub-Saharan Africa, provided that the risk of teratogenicity should be closely monitored.

Anemia is independent predictor of mortality and immunologic progression of disease among women with HIV in Tanzania

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the association of anemia with mortality and disease progression among a cohort of women with HIV in Dares Salaam, Tanzania. Adjusted models indicated that anemia was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and AIDS-related mortality, independent of CD4 cell count, World Health Organization clinical stage, age, pregnancy, vitamin supplementation, and body mass index.

Adult mortality and erosion of household viability in AIDS-afflicted towns, estates, and villages in eastern Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

The impact of adult deaths on households in small towns, estates, and villages in eastern Zimbabwe is described to provide evidence for household viability, which is threatened by sustained crisis-level mortality in widely disseminated HIV epidemics. It is seen that households with AIDS deaths spent more on health care and had more frequently dissolved or relocated than those with non-AIDS deaths.
