Cancer and clotting - Trousseau's warning

Article Abstract:

Trousseau observed an association between deep vein thrombosis, or the formation of blood clots in deep veins, and cancer in 1872. Numerous studies since the late 1800's have observed increased formation of blood clots in cancer patients, especially those with certain cancers of the pancreas, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Cells involved in the blood clotting process have also been observed near tumors. Cancer cells and their products may activate blood clotting factors. A research study found that 10.5% of individuals with a first episode of deep-vein thrombosis of unknown cause were diagnosed with cancer during a two-year follow-up period, compared with 1.9% of those with secondary deep-vein thrombosis. Patients with deep-vein thrombosis of unknown cause may have a type of cancer that cannot be diagnosed using standard tests or they may still be in the early stages of the disease.

Recombinant osteoprotegerin for juvenile Paget's disease

Article Abstract:

The effects of treatment with recombinant osteoprotegerin in two adult siblings with juvenile Paget's disease are investigated. Remarkable responses were found to experimental treatment with recombinant osteoprotegerin and apart from mild hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia, no apparent adverse events occurred.
