Total number of particles in a bounded region estimated directly with the nucleator: granulosa cell number in ovarian follicles

Article Abstract:

The nucleator principle may be an effective method for estimating the number of granulosa cells in an ovarian follicle, or the spheroidal cell aggregate that encloses an egg. Granulosa cells make up the layer of small cells that forms the wall of an ovarian follicle. The nucleator principle was used to estimate the number of granulosa cells in nine ovarian follicles from mice and compared to estimates made using the fractionator principle. Estimates made using the nucleator principle agreed with those made using the fractionator principle. The nucleator principle provided both unbiased and precise estimates of granulosa cell number. The nucleator principle only requires fifty granulosa cells to make an estimate. The purpose of determining the number of granulosa cells is to determine when the egg should be removed from the follicle for studies of meiosis in the laboratory.

Primary ovarian leiomyosarcoma as a new component in the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome: a case report

Article Abstract:

Doctors report the case of a 20-year-old woman with nevoid basal cell carcinoma (NBCC) syndrome who also had an ovarian tumor called leiomyosarcoma. NBCC is a genetic disorder that causes several skin disorders as well as other anatomical abnormalities. People with the disorder also have an increased risk of cancer.

Ovarian vein thrombosis associated with Crohn's disease: a case report

Article Abstract:

A blood clot in the ovarian vein could explain some cases of abdominal pain in patients with Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease and affected patients also have a higher risk of abnormal blood clot formation.
