Tourism and Hotel Revenues Before and After Passage of Smoke-Free Restaurant Ordinances

Article Abstract:

Local laws banning smoking in public areas such as restaurants do not seem to have a negative impact on tourism. This claim is often made by opponents of such laws. Researchers analyzed hotel revenues in three states and six cities that enacted smoke-free ordinances. In four localities, hotel revenues actually increased after passage of such laws. In four others, there was no significant change and in one locale the rate of growth in hotel revenues slowed but did not decrease. International tourism was not affected by the anti-smoking ordinances.

Association of the California Tobacco Control Program with declines in cigarette consumption and mortality from heart disease

Article Abstract:

An aggressive anti-tobacco campaign can not only reduce the number of smokers, but also the number of deaths from heart disease. California enacted a cigarette surtax in 1989 to fund an anti-smoking campaign. Even though the program was cut back in 1992, by 1997 it had prevented 33,300 deaths from heart disease that would have occurred had the program never existed.
