Toxicological considerations of tooth bleaching using peroxide-containing agents

Article Abstract:

Tooth bleaching agents are probably not toxic as long as they are used in the appropriate manner. These agents have been used since the 1930s, and there are few reports of serious adverse effects. Most bleaching agents contain hydrogen peroxide, which can create free radicals. Free radicals are suspected to play a role in carcinogenesis, aging and degenerative diseases. However, animal studies have found no serious side effects from the peroxides used in tooth bleaching preparations. In humans, the most common side effect is temperature sensitivity and irritation of the mucosa.
