Tracking hospital deaths in a developing region

Article Abstract:

A study identified death rate patterns at four major hospitals in Iran. These patterns have been calculated by cause of death, time of day, relative date, and age. One hospital attributed 40% of their deaths to traffic accidents. Death rates at another hospital were higher on the second day of hospitalization than the first. A third hospital had high infant death rates. Death rates by time of day varied between hospitals. Poor basic health care and facilities may partly explain these patterns.

Lokomaika'i (inner health) in a remarkable hospital

Article Abstract:

Several hospital-wide programs have been developed and implemented to foster the spirit of aloha and the philosophy of lokomaika'i, or inner health, at the 536-bed Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. These philosophies guide the hospital in providing patient and family-centered care, which address patients' and employees' physical, spiritual, and emotional health. The hospital provides a variety of innovative therapies and has created a healing garden.

Developing and testing changes in delivery of care

Article Abstract:

Physicians do not have to wait for clinical trials to determine whether a particular treatment will benefit their patients. They can test the value of treatments for individual patients in their offices and health care organizations using the Plan-Do-Study-Act scenario. This involves giving a patient a certain treatment, keeping detailed records on the outcome, and changing the management of the disease accordingly.
