Transplantation of thymus tissue in complete DiGeorge syndrome

Article Abstract:

Babies with DiGeorge syndrome may benefit from a thymus gland transplant. DiGeorge syndrome is a congenital defect that causes T cell deficiency. The thymus gland is where T cells develop, so researchers transplanted donated thymus glands into five babies from one to four months who had DiGeorge syndrome. Four of the babies showed a T cell response to foreign stimuli after transplantation. Two of the babies survived and biopsies of the transplanted thymus gland showed active T cell production. One child had normal T cell production up to five years after the transplant.

Sex, drugs, prisons, and HIV

Article Abstract:

The international guidelines for reducing the risk of HIV transmission inside prisons reveals that all U.S. prison systems fall short in spite of receiving best counseling and testing practices, medical care and prerelease services. A new report by the National Minority AIDS Council calls for routine, voluntary HIV testing in prisons and on release making condoms available as well as expanding reentry programs that address HIV issues.
