"Treatment" cosmetics: hype or help?
Article Abstract:
Most cosmetics used to treat skin appear to be safe when used as directed but many could be considered drugs. Lotions that allegedly repair sun damage or reverse the signs of aging could be considered drugs since these claims go beyond the scope of most cosmetics. Hydroxy acid products are the most common treatment cosmetics and cause a mild skin inflammation. The long-term risks of chronic skin inflammation are not known. Retinol attracts water to the epidermis and may rebuild collagen. There is less evidence for the effectiveness of topical vitamin C and E and botanical additives.

Psychiatric Help May Shrink Some Waistlines
Article Abstract:
Primary care physicians must realize that some overweight people may have a psychiatric disorder. Studies have shown that about one-fourth of all overweight people who see a doctor about their weight have a psychiatric illness, usually depression. Many believe they are depressed because they are overweight. However, it is also likely that their depression caused them to eat more. Behavioral therapies used to treat people with eating disorders may benefit people with weight problems.
