Trigeminal neuralgia: neurosurgical management options

Article Abstract:

Neurosurgery may be effective in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) that either do not respond to medication or who cannot tolerate medication. TN is a common facial pain disorder affecting the jaw area and is also known as tic douloureux. Neurosurgical techniques used to treat TN are peripheral nerve blocks, percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy, glycerol injection, balloon compression of the trigeminal ganglion, and open operations to decompress or cut the trigeminal nerve. Carbamazepine, phenytoin, and baclofen are drugs used to treat TN before surgery is needed.

Diagnosis and treatment of patients with trigeminal neuralgi

Article Abstract:

The literature regarding the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN), the most common form of neuralgia, is reviewed. It is suggested that the clinicians must recognize TN and diagnose it correctly for patients to receive proper referral and therapy for this relatively treatable condition.
