Trouble at sea

Article Abstract:

Administering halofantrine to her sick husband saved his life, according to former peadiatric intensive care nurse Helen Smith. The couple were on a round the world sailing trip when Neil Smith became ill with suspected malaria. Helen Smith was advised to give her husband the halofantrine as they were too far away from any medical services to receive help. No traces of the malaria virus were found in Neil Smith's blood once they had returned to land.

Malaria: It causes, treatment and methods of prevention

Article Abstract:

Malaria is a serious tropical disease affecting people in Africa, South and Central America, parts of the Middle East and Asia and is caused by parasitic plasmodium species that are carried by the female of an anopheles mosquito and introduced into the bloodstream of humans by an infected mosquito. Wearing long-sleeve clothing, long trousers or skirts can prevent it, and avoiding dark colours, as mosquitoes are attracted more to dark colours.
