Two knees of one person: data analysis strategies for paired joints or organs

Article Abstract:

The use of advanced computer-assisted statistics' packages may be appropriate in studies involving two sides of the body such as knee research. Most studies cannot isolate treatment effects on one knee or the other. Package applications may include comparing treatment effects over multiple patients or within each patient taking into account characteristics of both knees. Computer support to run these programs is typically extensive and may require assistance from a statistician. Simpler analyses can use either one knee or the other.

Dermatomyositis - how far to go!

Article Abstract:

Dermatomyositis may be symptomatic of hidden cancer. Doctors treated a 73-year-old woman repeatedly for muscle pain and weakness and a swollen rash on her face, chest and back. She received initial treatment with corticosteroids. Endoscopic examination for feeding tube placement revealed an inoperable gastric cancer. Cancer may be present in 7-34% of patients with dermatomyositis. When the condition is recurrent or unresponsive to treatment, an age-specific examination for malignancies should be undertaken.

Ophthalmic manifestations of dermatomyositis

Article Abstract:

Visual disturbances in patients with dermatomyositis are rare, but rapid treatment with high-dose immunosuppressant drugs may be necessary to prevent permanent eye damage from vasculitis. A 25-year-old women reported a spreading rash, fatigue, and joint pain, and was initially treated with prednisone for suspected lupus. A marked rise in her creatine kinase (CK) level confirmed the correct diagnosis of dermatomyositis, an autoimmune disease. Vascular injury, inflammation, and eye swelling can impair vision.
