Ultrasonigraphically guided transvaginal aspiration of tuboovarian abscesses and pyosalpinges: an optional treatment for pelvic inflammatory disease

Article Abstract:

Ultrasound may be used to guide doctors in aspirating abscesses in fallopian tubes in women with severe pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Researchers used ultrasound to remove infectious material from fallopian tubes through the vaginal route from 15 women with severe PID. The women's symptoms included high fever, high white blood cell count, and tender abdomen. All of the women recovered from the acute infection, and none experienced complications. The use of ultrasound may enable doctors to aspirate abscesses before they became viscous and hard to remove. Aspiration of abscesses allowed for a quicker recovery than the use of antibiotics alone would.
