Umbilical cord blood collection before placental delivery during cesarean delivery increases cord blood volume and nucleated cell number available for transplantation

Article Abstract:

Doctors can recover more umbilical cord blood and more red blood cells if they take the blood before the placenta detaches during a cesarean delivery. Cord blood is often transplanted into children and adults to treat certain blood diseases.

Developmental changes in adhesion molecule expressions in umbilical cord blood CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor and stem cells

Article Abstract:

The number of cell adhesion molecules on fetal blood cells increases as the pregnancy progresses. These molecules may help the blood cells accumulate in bone marrow. This means that cord blood taken from premature babies may be useful in stem cell transplantation and prenatal gene therapy.

Effect of preeclampsia on umbilical cord blood hematopoietic progenitor-stem cells

Article Abstract:

Cord blood taken from pregnant women who have preeclampsia may have fewer stem cells than cord blood taken from healthy pregnant women. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy. Cord blood is often used as a source of stem cells for transplantation.
