Unless law altered, PPRC sees Medicare pay decline by 2000

Article Abstract:

Physician Payment Review Commission (PPRC) simulations indicate that the effects of 1993 Medicare restraints are likely to show up in 1995 as sharp declines in payments made to physicians. It is possible, if Congress does not make changes to the Medicare system, that, by 2005, physicians will be paid less for treating Medicare patients than they are in 1995. The PPRC recommends changes in the default formulas that are use to set the volume performance standards and payment updates for Medicare.

Primary care may face Medicare pay cuts

Article Abstract:

Medicare payments for primary-care categories will fall 2.2% in Jan 1996, if Congress does not change the formulas by which Medicare updates are determined. The Physician Payment Review Commission is recommending that Congress make such changes. Under the current formulas, which were intended to benefit providers of primary care, payments for surgery will increase 3.9%, and payments for other nonsurgical services will rise 0.6%.
