Update in hematology
Article Abstract:
Low molecular weight heparin is so much safer than unfractionated heparin that it can be used at home by patients with deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when blood clots form in the major veins of the leg. Elevated blood levels of homocysteine, estrogen replacement therapy and a prior episode of thrombosis may increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Children with iron deficiency may do poorly in school and may benefit from iron supplements. The drug pamidronate may reduce the risk of fractures in people with multiple myeloma.
