Use of exhaled nitric oxide measurements to guide treatment in chronic asthma

Article Abstract:

An estimated 97 patients were assigned with asthma who were regularly receiving treatment with inhaled corticosteroids to have their corticosteroid dose adjusted on the basis of either fraction of exhaled nitric oxide FE(sub NO) measurements or an algorithm based on conventional guidelines. It is concluded that with the use of FE(sub NO) measurements, maintenance doses of inhaled corticosteroids may be significantly reduced without compromising asthma control.

A comparison of active and simulated chiropractic manipulation as adjunctive treatment for childhood asthma

Article Abstract:

Chiropractic manipulation appears to have no benefit in children with asthma. Researchers randomly assigned 80 children to receive 20 to 36 treatments with active chiropractic manipulation or simulated chiropractic manipulation in addition to their usual treatments. At the two-month and four-month evaluations, both groups experienced similar improvements in symptoms, decreased use of bronchodilators and increased quality of life.

A longitudinal, population-based, cohort study of childhood asthma followed to adulthood

Article Abstract:

About one-fourth of all children with asthma will have asthma when they grow up, according to a study of 1,037 children. Risk factors for asthma persistence or relapse after a remission included female sex, airway hyperresponsiveness, allergy to house dust mites, smoking, and early age of onset. Persistent wheezing was associated with poor lung function.
