Use of microbial cultures and antibiotics in the prevention of infection-associated preterm birth

Article Abstract:

The evidence regarding infection-associated preterm birth is summarized to make appropriate recommendations. Large well-designed trials prove that the routine administration of antibiotics to women with preterm labor and intact membranes is not beneficial, and that antibiotics regimes including macrolides are beneficial for preterm rupture of the membranes.

Fetal fibronectin and bacterial vaginosis are associated with preterm birth in women who are symptomatic for preterm labor

Article Abstract:

A study to codify the relationship between tests for bacterial vaginosis (BV) and fetal fibronectin (fFN) with preterm labor/preterm delivery is conducted. The results revealed that women who are symptomatic for preterm labor should be considered for fFN and BV testing.
