User-friendly assessment of needs

Article Abstract:

The use of the Camberwell Assessment of Need Short Appraisal Schedule (CANSAS) questionnaire helps mental health nurses make quick assessments of the needs of working age adult patients. CANSAS was developed to meet the needs of mentally ill patients, taking into account any serious health problems which may affect their working capabilities, while ensuring those with only minimal training are able to make assessments. All social, mental and health aspects are covered by the questionnaire, providing a thorough assessment of an individual's needs.

A practical way forward in forging alliances

Article Abstract:

Health care workers need to realise that mental health clients have an important part to play in their own recovery, therefore there is a need to redefine existing relationships between health care workers and service users. Professionals should consider carefully the language they use so as not to demean people with mental health problems. They should promote user involvement and change their approach to working with people rather than for people.

Accepting the inner voices

Article Abstract:

New research has revealed that hearing voices is not necessarily associated with psychiatric illness but is commonly experienced by normal people. Many professionals believe that voice-hearing should not be regarded as manifestation of a disease but can be considered as part of the human experience. Guidelines for nurses working with people who hear voices are presented.
