Article Abstract:

It has traditionally been assumed that computer technology has no role to play in the treatment of people with mental health problems, as direct human relationships are regarded as extremely important in this area of work. However, treatment which involves arming patients with techniques for coping, such as positive thinking, may be carried out just as effectively through a computer program. A self-management approach can be equally effective as drug treatment in tackling most types of depression and anxiety. However, there are currently few really good computer programs of this kind available.

Handing back the reins

Article Abstract:

Leagrave Lodge, Luton, England, is adapting its model of care for mentally ill patients. It changed from providing a dependency-based, institutionalized form of care to offering a user-based model. Staff now perceive themselves as facilitators of independent living, rather than as carers. Staff discuss care goals with patients and provide life skills training. Patients are usually responsible for their own medication and finances. A user group establishes user needs and strategies, and there is user representation on all group meetings.

Special solutions

Article Abstract:

The Special Hospitals Service Authority (SHSA), which in 1989 was made responsible for the management of the UK's special hospitals for the mentally ill, has now been replaced by the High Security Psychiatric Services Commissioning Board (HSPSCB). The SHSA was successful in a number of ways, including giving a promise to provide 24-hour therapeutic care and ensuring that additional resources have been brought in to improve hospital environments and foster research and professional development.
