Vaccine program headed for scrap heap?

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration's Vaccines for Children (VFC) program is encountering an increasing number of challenges by members of Congress as its costs escalate. The program initially was authorized $457 million but is expected to cost $1.4 billion by 1997. Reps. Scott Klug and Ron Wyden, and Sen. Dale Bumpers allege that the program does not seem to be improving immunization rates. A proposal to take a block grant approach is opposed by VFC supporters who claim it will be adversely affected by the budget process in Congress. Two million children are estimated to lack vaccination.

Immigration bills could create public health havoc

Article Abstract:

Public health officials are concerned about the repercussions of two proposed immigration control bills pending before Congress. Both bills would deny access to means-tested programs, such as Medicaid, for undocumented immigrants. Healthcare officials are concerned that the bills will jeopardize the control of communicable diseases and increase treatment costs. The proposed bills would save over $2 bil in Medicaid funds through FY 2002, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Who will cover the kids?

Article Abstract:

Some child-health experts claim that Republican-sponsored Medicaid reforms would threaten many children's access to medical care. A quarter of the nation's children receive Medicaid-financed care. Provisions of legislation being considered by Congress would replace the Medicaid system with capped block grants to states. The legislation's proponents say that states will not cut back children's services.
