Article Abstract:

Delegates at the 1997 UK Labour Party conference had a different perception of the situation in the National Health Service than did Health Secretary Frank Dobson, yet there seemed to be little concern about the division. Delegates spoke about service cuts, low staff morale and recruitment problems. Dobson spoke about dedicated staff and the beginning of a new era, and failed to mention pay or service rationing. The conference avoided any real debate on the issues and appeared to find them relatively unimportant.

Take three MPs

Article Abstract:

The opinions of MPs on remedies for the NHS differ but their opinions of important election issues are similar. Simon Coombes, Tory MP for Swindon, believes that health professionals should decide, rather than politicians, about trust status for hospitals. Sylvia Heal, Labour MP for Mid Staffordshire, believes that the NHS must not be a subsidiary issue and Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrat MP for Southwark and Bermondsey feels that things are generally better under the trust.
