Vile bodies

Article Abstract:

The UK nursing profession should re-examine its organisations if it wishes to have good leadership. The main nursing organisations have outmoded organisational patterns. The structure of the Royal College of Nursing gives power to the General Secretary, and the departments are rigidly hierarchical. The Department of Health also has a strict hierarchy, and both this department and the UK Central Council are government agents with no mandate to promote nursing or to have a leadership role. Structures such as these cannot promote leadership which is open, creative and empowering.

Leading from the front

Article Abstract:

The UK government wants leadership in nursing to play an important role in health care, which is indicative of its intention to put nursing at the centre of health service changes. In the document on nursing strategy 'Making a Difference,'there is a call for the nursing profession to pinpoint leaders and accept risks. It does not, however, suggest many measures.

Crisis? What crisis?

Article Abstract:
