Waiting for guidance: wide variations in long-term care for older people have prompted calls for nationwide standards

Article Abstract:

There are calls for national standards for the running of private nursing homes, after an investigation revealed deficiencies in the care of older people at St Christopher's Nursing Home in Hatfield. This is disputed by the company that runs the home, Takare, believing that the methodology is flawed resulting in inaccurate and inconsistent findings. A review team has made recommendations covering registration, staffing, complaints and monitoring issues.

The care alliance

Article Abstract:

Little attention has been given to the need for integration between practice nursing and community nursing within moves towards health-care purchasing. Purchasers often find distinctions between community nursing and practice nursing to be misleading, and this presents a barrier to a holistic view of primary-health care nursing. It is now time for purchasers to seek partners in order to ensure the most effective purchasing for health.
