Article Abstract:

Problems related to alcohol and drugs and lifestyle diseases such as cancer and coronary heart disease are the major areas targetted in Swedish health promotion campaigns. Lorry drivers were the primary targets of a healthy eating campaign, with their diets perceived as high in fat as they often eat in cafeterias. The drivers were given information on alternative diets and a chef visited cafeterias to demonstrate low-fat recipes. The number of people suffering from allergies and asthma rose dramatically in Sweden during 1984-1999. The UK has similar public health concerns to Sweden.

Functional bracing of tibial shaft fractures

Article Abstract:

The risk of non-union, one of the three main potential complications of conservative treatment of tibial shaft fractures, can be reduced by using functional bracing. Functional bracing holds the fracture in place while stimulating healing by allowing micro-movement at the site. Functional bracing not only reduces the risk of infection associated with internal or external fixation while avoiding the need for a lengthy anaesthetic, but allows early weight-bearing and mobilisation of neighbouring joints. Instructions on applying a functional brace are included.
