Weight on their minds

Article Abstract:

The Annex Nursing Development Unit, an out-patient treatment facility for patients with annorexia nervosa, is successfully running as an autonomous unit and should be used as a model for patient care and service within the NHS. The unit operates using a case management system where an individualistic approach is adopted by using a named-nurse practitioner who is responsible for the referred patient. Care comprises of follow-up, short-term and long-term treatment, and support for patients who are awaiting in-patient treatment.

Involving patients: lessons from PACE

Article Abstract:

Patients should be involved in their own care and treatment for several reasons, such as ethics and the positive impact on outcome resulting from a greater understanding of procedures involved in treatment. The UK government is seeking to improve health care quality through a drive for effectiveness by patient and carer involvement. Health care professionals should allow patient preferences to guide their care planning, with patients being helped in their decision making using a wider range of educational materials.
