What kind of leader are you?

Article Abstract:

Nurses' leadership qualities encompass the managerial qualities of integrity, responsibility and an active approach but extend them with additional qualities. These additional qualities include the ability to adopt a long-term view and a proactive approach. Nurses developing into leaders have to assimilate a range of issues including a change of role perspective, how and why to delegate work, and the importance of building good relationships. A questionnaire for use as a leadership development tool is included.

The medicine wheel and the millennium

Article Abstract:

Nursing managers are expected to lead departments by example, protecting their staff from risks while encouraging greater patient care. The holistic medicine approach can be used by nursing managers to creative a positive working environment which encourages staff to develop their inner-skills. People can be encouraged to contribute in specific key areas if they have skills, while not feeling redundant in other areas. Managers should encourage staff to work together as a team, complementing each others skills.

Myth and reality

Article Abstract:

Nurse leaders should try to ensure that they and their team have enough time to take a creative approach to problem solving. Creative thinking can be a very valuable approach to dealing with many aspects of nursing, and it is important to investigate all possibilities, rather than simply focusing on what is generally regarded as practical. It is also possible to create very strong nursing teams through taking the creative thinking approach, as all members feel able to make a contribution.
