The battle over occupational hearing loss

Article Abstract:

Health professionals oppose the compliance memo released by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) on Jun 4, 1991. The memo orders the fining of companies which fail to record on the OSHA Form 200 the workers' hearing loss of 25dB or more, tested at 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 Hz. Hygienists and other industrial audiologists claim the former hearing threshold recordability limit of 10dB is more appropriate because at this stage, the ear impairment is in its infancy and can still be corrected.

Side-impact helmets enter the safety scene

Article Abstract:

A review of the helmet safety standards of the American National Safety Institute is expected to result in a proposal for a side-impact helmet standard. Despite weight, cost, and comfort disadvantages, side-impact helmets offer improved protection against head injuries, especially from lateral blows. Canada is at the forefront of side-impact helmet use, with the approval of the standards for lateral-impact helmets and with provinces planning legislation promoting their use.
