What's the point of ... lecturer practitioners?

Article Abstract:

A lecturer practitioner has a management role in the workplace while teaching and conducting research. The role was developed so their expertise would not be lost on the wards if they wanted to teach or do research. Lecturer practitioners should teach students about standards of best practice while demonstrating these in a clinical setting. They need to have a master's degree, a teaching qualification and extensive clinical experience. There are few posts available because of problems integrating the academic world with nursing.

A steep learning curve for teachers

Article Abstract:

Nurse education has been much in the news with the ongoing debates about the move to diploma education and nurse education in universities. This will mean a new set of challenges for nurse teachers who broadly welcome the move of nurse education into universities. However it means increased workloads and expectations, often without the accompanying support and resources. There is also the fact that universities are more research based, whereas former colleges of nursing are driving by teaching.

National Vocational Qualifications?

Article Abstract:

Nurses can take National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), generally at level 2 or 3. There are mixed feelings about such qualifications among the profession, with some claiming that the examinations ought to be incorporated into the training of health care staff, and others claiming that they could threaten nursing as there could be a lowering of standards.
