When home is best

Article Abstract:

Relocating elderly people to nursing homes has advantages and disadvantages. In a lot of cases it can be more dangerous to relocate the elderly than to allow them to remain in their own homes. According to a 1998 survey of elderly patients applying for residential care, social workers believed that with adequate support half of applications could cope in the community. A 1987 report by A. Norman indicates that relatives often persuade an elderly person to go into care. The elderly have the right to decide for themselves how they should live.

Rehabilitation at home following hip fracture

Article Abstract:

Maintaining continuity of care is vital when a patient who has suffered a hip fracture leaves hospital. Continuity of care can only be achieved through communication between primary and secondary care teams. A discharge plan must be drawn up, and professionals such as occupational therapists and physiotherapists must be consulted. A home visit before discharge from hospital makes it possible to assess the patient's requirements and to undertake a risk assessment of the home environment.

More than just drips, drains and dressings
