When hormones fail to act

Article Abstract:

Current theories on the mechanisms of hormone resistant diseases may be traceable to scientists with similar theories over 50 years ago. A recent study has examined the characteristics of patients with thyroid hormone resistance, a disease in which target organs in the body fail to respond to the stimulation of thyroid hormone. Fuller Albright in 1942 recognized the possibility that the target organ could be responsible for the failure of a patient with a hormonal deficiency to respond to an injection of the deficient hormone. In the 1930's, Philip Smith and Leopold Lichtwitz had expressed similar theories about receptors in target organs as those put forward by Fuller Albright. Modern laboratory techniques such as hormonal immunoassays have confirmed the reality of these theories. Physicians should consider the possibility that a patient has a rare hormonal resistant disease particularly when the patient's symptoms and hormonal laboratory test results do not agree.

Checklist of information for inclusion in reports of clinical trials

Article Abstract:

Specific guidelines for reporting research studies in the medical literature may help to make these studies more complete and easier to compare with other studies. A group of researchers, editors, and statisticians proposed a short list of format guidelines for future researchers to use when preparing reports for publication and for editors to use when reviewing these studies. Researchers would need to identify the location of each item in the guidelines in their submitted reports. Editors could then quickly evaluate the completeness of submitted reports by using these guidelines. Current researchers could use these guidelines during training of new researchers in how to prepare reports for publication. Consistent study reporting could help doctors to better evaluate treatment options and help future researchers when pooling the results from similar studies.
