When knowledge is power

Article Abstract:

The introduction of flatter management structures within the UK National Health Service has made bottom-up practice development appear increasingly attractive. Nurses are encouraged to extend their existing roles, rather than seek opportunities for career development through promotion, and in this way bottom-up practice management can boost lateral career development. Professional autonomy can be increased, and this can in turn boost job satisfaction and morale. Establishing nurses' practice development skills will boost the base of the healthcare provider while ensuring that clinical practice responds to demands.

Taken on board

Article Abstract:

The establishment of primary care groups in the UK was expected to help further the cause of nurses to become more involved in daily practice life, although the reality appears to be far from ideal. PCGs need to be willing to take on board the views of nurses and implement changes. Nurses on PCGs must be prepared to give a lot of spare time to the board, with little extra remuneration to compensate.
