Why gender is a barrier to contraception advice

Article Abstract:

The Contraception Education Service, which is run jointly by the Health Education Authority and The Family Planning Association, commissioned a telephone and observational survey of 260 doctors' surgeries, 58 sexual health clinics and 63 family planning clinics to assess the extent and quality of contraception advice being offered to men. The survey revealed that 33% of doctors and 10% of family planning clinics did not display information leaflets and that clinics need to offer men more advice and educate them about contraception.

Giving contraception advice

Article Abstract:

Family planning nurses need to be aware of many issues beyond merely giving advice on contraception methods. For this reason, they may find it useful to undergo psychosexual training and to keep a personal reflective diary. It is vital to gain experience in listening and recalling conversation, to think about what the client is not saying and to observe body language. Care must be taken to respond sensitively to the needs of many different client groups.
