Will AMA 'olive branch' to HMOs have impact on membership?

Article Abstract:

Reaction was mixed to comments made by American Medical Assn (AMA) Exec VP James S. Todd in praise of health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Supporters of HMOs predict that the laudatory comments will encourage HMO physicians to join the AMA, while detractors claim that private practice members will leave the AMA in protest. Dr. Todd rejected the idea that the AMA was abandoning private practice and fee-for-service care, stating instead that HMOs provided greater freedom of choice for health care consumers.

Study details patterns in enrollment growth for HMOs

Article Abstract:

A Group Health Association of America report on health maintenance organizations (HMOs) reveals that independent practice association (IPA) and network model HMOs are growing at a faster rate than group and staff model HMOs. The report shows that enrollment in IPA model HMOs grew by 21% and that network model HMOs increased by 39.4% between 1988 and 1991. However, group model and staff model HMO enrollment increased at a slower rate with 9.6% and 7.1% growth for the same period, respectively.
