Will travel restrictions control the international spread of pandemic influenza?

Article Abstract:

A study analyzes the impact of World Health Organization travel advisories in the wake of the 2003 epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and evaluates the likely effect of similar interventions in the case of an influenza pandemic. It concludes that the efforts of the WHO and the international community should be targeted at bringing any emerging influenza epidemic under control as rapidly as possible in the country in which the new strain first emerges, as this is likely to be the dominant factor in restricting international spread.

Threat of pandemic brings flu drug back to life

Article Abstract:

Health officials are finding ways and spending millions on doses for curing the avian influenza virus as the drug available for curing has suffered from lackadaisical marketing efforts. Relenza, marketed by GlaxoSmithKline, and Roche's Tamiflu both bind to the active site of the virus's neuraminidase protein, rendering the virus unable to escape its host cell and infect others.
