Wise counsel

Article Abstract:

Although many nurses believe they counsel the learning disabled in the course of their work, many still need training to counsel effectively. There is the risk of untrained nurses giving hasty advice, or making the wrong assumptions. The counsellor must offer a person with learning disabilities 'taster' session of different experiences, such as leisure pursuits, to help him make an informed choice about them. The therapist may also use operant conditioning by giving rewards for acceptable behaviours. G. Egan's approach to counselling the learning disabled in also discussed.

The health wheel: a tool for assessing carers' health needs

Article Abstract:

Health care services can be reviewed and evaluated using information gained regarding the health of carers responsible for a person with learning difficulties. Carers' health can be directly related to the stress involved in providing full-time care for a family member. Physical illnesses can develop from the general fatigue which builds up over time when constantly having to lift, wash, feed and care for a person with learning difficulties. An assessment tool allows health care professionals to see where services can be improved.
