Nature cures

Article Abstract:

The term hydrotherapy in complementary medicine can be used to define a range of treatments that use water to heal. Many are outside conventional medical practice, such as the promotion of bathing in natural spa waters or sea-bathing to obtain health benefits. Other practices include drinking only water for a 24-36 hour period to detoxify the system, but this can be dangerous for some people. The Bates method of exercise is claimed to improve defective vision to an extent where people no longer require spectacles. The Bates method and hydrotherapy are examined.

Clinch the ideal

Article Abstract:

Student nurses are often very idealistic, pointing out practices which are unsatisfactory and questioning why improvements are not made. However, this attitude often fades when the student has had more experience of nursing, and they begin to simply accept that certain things remain as they are. This could be seen as a negative development, as a certain element of idealism can be a good thing. It is time for nurses to be prepared to take the responsibility for implementing change.

Order, order!

Article Abstract:

Little useful discussion takes place during House of Commons health question time. In one session before the summer recess only nine out of 28 questions received answers in 45 minutes. Questions covered private care, community care and the Patient's Charter. Ministers used statistics to answer complaints and there was much self-congratulation. Virginia Bottomley answered a question on waiting lists with irrelevant lists of general improvements.
