Core truths

Article Abstract:

Some observers have complained of a decline in the standard of basic nursing skills as the emphasis in nurse education has moved towards enabling skills such as communication and counselling. However enabling skills are just as important as basic nursing care and technical competence. Mentally ill people on a ward where essential procedures were carried out to a rigid routine that made no allowances for individual needs or preferences looked immaculate, but a similar group of patients cared for on a ward where nurses used an enabling approach were much more alert and animated.

Facing the challenge

Article Abstract:

Psychiatric nurses should become aware of the mental health needs of AIDS and HIV infected patients. Fears for relationships, employment and housing can cause guilt and depression. Brain disorders may develop later. Psychiatric nurses can offer support through stress control, counselling and coping programmes. Early recognition of changes in brain abnormalities may enable treatment. However, the fluctuating physical and mental needs require close cooperation between all the support services.

Hobson's choice

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service (NHS) Patient Accommodation Bill aims to legislate a patient's right to single-sex accommodation in hospital. The Bill received its third reading in the House of Lords in February 1995, which coincided with the publishing of the revised Patient's Charter for England, which states that patients have the right to be told if they are to be cared for in a mixed ward before they go in, with the exception of emergencies.
