Seen but not heard

Article Abstract:

Authoritative and articulate nurses are not often portrayed by journalists in the media, while doctors confidently express their views without hesitation. Nurses are more cautious, possibly due to their good manners and natural reserve. Changes are occurring in the language of nursing, with racist and sexist language apparently now under control. Health care names are also changing in an effort to show respect for individual patients and to prevent them from becoming collections of problems. Language changes most constantly in the fields of HIV and AIDS.

Everyone's problem

Article Abstract:

It is not a criminal offense to knowingly infect people with the HIV virus through unprotected sex in England and Wales, but it is under Scottish common law. The case alleging that a number of women were knowingly infected with the HIV virus by a hemophiliac from Birmingham, England, has raised the question of legislation. Since it has been proved that enforcing such a law is very difficult, it would seem that that those calling for legislation feel the need to heap more punishment on the heads of people who are infected with HIV.

Facing the sack

Article Abstract:

Nurses should react positively if faced with redundancy. Professional associations can offer advice but nurses should help themselves. They should reassess skills and be open-minded when reviewing possible options. They should practice interview techniques and present curriculum vitae carefully. Advice from outplacement counsellors can be useful but their success rate should be checked. Nurses should be well-informed and join a professional association even if they are not immediately threatened.
