Article Abstract:

Local health trusts in Cornwall, UK are preparing a strategy to deal with a large influx of visitors expected to visit the region during August 1999 when there will be a full solar eclipse of the sun. Over 1 million people are expected which will place pressure on hospital beds, doctors services and optical services. People are being urged not to look directly at the sun during the eclipse as there is a danger of eye injury or even blindness. An extra 650,000 pounds sterling is needed to cover expected medical costs associated with the event.

Current affairs

Article Abstract:

A medical forum is seeking to enhance the public and professional image of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) by launching a campaign to license clinics and recognize the qualifications of ECT specialist nurses. The Royal College of Psychiatrist is seeking a greater level of educational involvement with ECT nursing, after carrying out an audit of the therapy in 1995 which uncovered a serious lack of training and structure. A government review of mental health is expected to lead to ECT clinics being licensed.

Wolf in sheep's clothing

Article Abstract:

Systemic lupus erythamatosus (SLE) probably affects one woman in 1,000 and one man in 9,000 in the UK, yet there is widespread ignorance of the disease amongst both health professionals and the general public. SLE is an autoimmune disease of the connective tissue. Its symptoms can include extreme fatigue, joint pains, a facial rash and depression, and many patients are told the symptoms are psychological. A mild form of the disease will affect only the skin, but more severe forms affect internal organs.
