Withdrawal syndrome

Article Abstract:

The withdrawal of rofecoxib (Vioxx), the leading drug for the management of rheumatoid arthritis by Merck due to the increased risk of cardiovascular side effects is discussed. The withdrawal of Vioxx and similar other cases have undermined the confidence in FDA and it is suggested that FDA should exercise its leadership and authority to keep playing the field level in the best interest of consumers and regaining public confidence must be at the top of the FDA agenda.

Setting the cytokine trap for autoimmunity

Article Abstract:

Research shows that a new class of protein-based anti-cytokine, the cytokine traps, provide two separate receptor chains that facilitate high-affinity binding. Data indicate that the two chains are linked by fusion of the IgG1 complement binding domain. Implications of these anti-cytokine agents in rheumatoid arthritis treatment are discussed.

Deficiency of interleukin-18 in mice leads to hyperphagia, obesity and insulin resistance

Article Abstract:

The presence of hyperphagia, obesity and insulin resistance in knockout mice deficient in IL-18 or IL-8 receptor, and in mice transgenic for expression of IL-18 binding protein is reported. Obesity of [II18.sup.-/-] mice resulted from accumulation of fat tissue based on increased food intake.
