Workers' compensation: how to avoid abuse

Article Abstract:

Several strategies in preventing fraud and abuse of the workers' compensation system are presented. Fraud and abuse of the system, perpetrated by both health care providers and employees, have cost employers between 10% and 30% of the more than $70 billion in workers' compensation expenses in 1992. Experts recommend programs that emphasizes not only injury prevention and safety but active claims management and successful return-to-work incentives to help curb such malpractice.

Factor human relations into workers'-comp costs

Article Abstract:

Results from a number of studies have shown that the way management deals with employees can affect workers'-compensation claims. Research shows that dissatisfied and unhappy employees are more likely to instigate such claims than those who are happy in their work. Managers who realise the high cost of worker-compensation have devised a number of policies to effectively deal with unhappy employees before they file costly claims.

Are you on track to reduce claims?

Article Abstract:

Automated incident-tracking software can be an effective tool in reducing of workers-compensation losses. Such software allows employers to sort and manipulate information on accidents and near-misses into a more useful, summary form. Employers can use incident-tracking systems to analyze trends which will help them find probable causes and take corrective actions.
