Young at heart

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service Executive has produced a report entitled Child Health in the Community: A guide to Good Practice. It proposes that children should be cared for in their own homes wherever possible rather than in a hospital. This affects the role of paediatric nurses by placing them in the community. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has introduced a two-year training course for children's nurses which leads to a Batchelor of Science degree. Other accelerated training packages are likely to be introduced. These will enhance the range of career options open to paediatric nurses.

The price of health

Article Abstract:

There are differing views as to the need for and likely impact of marketing techniques in the NHS. Some people believe that the promotion of health services is distasteful, while for others health service reforms and the development of the internal market make it essential to turn to marketing. Marketing is likely to grow in importance as health care suppliers compete for NHS budgets, and will not encourage patients to seek unnecessary treatment, as GPs, especially fundholders, will have the ultimate control over a patient's treatment.

The wraps come off

Article Abstract:

Many incontinence sufferers feel ashamed of their condition and try to hide them from friends, family and colleagues. A parish priest tells of his experiences as a lifelong incontinence sufferer and how it affected his schooldays and subsequent career as an army officer. In a bid to help other sufferers who have psychological problems associated with incontinence, he has become chairman of IncoTact, a 400-strong charitable support group that aims to raise public awareness and support for people with continence problems.
