A novel approach to product design and development in a concurrent engineering environment

Article Abstract:

An innovative four-step algorithm for achieving effective collaboration between designers and marketers of new durable industrial products in a concurrent engineering environment is presented. The design and development of a washing machine is used to illustrate the importance of such collaboration in arriving at a final product that satisfies consumer requirements. Reconciling the opposing views of the marketing and design functions at the conceptual stage of the new product design process is an important factor in the product's subsequent success.

A process design approach based on the fusion model

Article Abstract:

The fusion model has been used to create a process design approach that fuses the functions of needs and technology assessment in innovative ideas. The process design approach utilizing such a model has been applied to a painting machine. Results indicate the facility in using such an approach. A production design was created combining product characteristics as well as technical and manufacturing characteristics. Process control activities for quality control were determined and the family tree analysis was found to need reinforcement.

The diffusion of advanced automation in developing countries: factors and adoption process

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to measure the extent and evaluate the process of diffusion of advanced automation in developing coutries, particularly in Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Turkey, India and Thailand. The study found similarities and differences in the process of diffusion between developing and developed countries. Similarities include motivations for adoption such as technological and managerial factors. Differences include techno-economic conditions under which diffusion occurs.
