Automation in the workplace: an Australasian perspective

Article Abstract:

The study investigates the approaches utilized by eighteen companies from Singapore, Korea and Japan with respect to automating their operating processes. The inquiry reveals that firms hoping to derive competitive advantage from automation adopt an extensive worker involvement program and implement the measures gradually. The study further points out that companies use meager production techniques to improve the operation of automated manufacturing systems, by placing greater stress on the automation of the process rather than on automating existing processes.

The Humble Telephone

Article Abstract:

After the British Telecom lost its monopoly, a flood of new, cheap, telephone equipment entered the market. They are: automatic answering, remote answering, memory phones, call diverters, cordless telephones, call logging, key systems, and cellular radio. All this means that the services should be a lot cheaper than British Telecom's are; and receiving equipment will be cheap and available from a wide range of suppliers.
