John Hockenberry has witnessed many disasters, including the Scud missiles in Israel, famine in Somalia and Kurdish refugees in the mountainous regions of Turkey, due to his determination as a broadcast journalist. He had remarkable achievements despite his paralysis since the age of 19.

Shalikashvili, John

John Shalikashvili, who headed the 1991 humanitarian relief effort to the Kurds in northern Iraq, became the first foreign-born chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when he was named to succeed Colin Powell in 1993. His life and career are profiled.
