Kathleen Sebelius, governor of Kansas, began her political career in 1986, when she won a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives, and in 1994 became the first woman Democrat to be elected to the office of Kansas state insurance commissioner. Kathleen is a member of the National Governors Association Committee on Education, Early Childhood, and Workforce and also co-chairs the associationEs Long-Term Care Task Force.

In 2003, the Baseball Writers Association of America named Eric Gagne, born on January 7, 1976, as the year's National League Cy Young Award winner, marking the first time a relief pitcher being so honored.
